Achievements, Trophies, Whatever

Dr Game,
Is there any purpose to Achievements? I heard that you can cash your gamerscore in for Microsoft Points, is this true?

No Jake, there is no real purpose to Achievements or your Gamerscore or trophies other than to prove to the rest of the world what you've done in a game.
The guys on PS Nation have described the purpose of Trophies (YO!) perfectly by suggesting it does nothing but show how big your E-Penis is.
I don't play games to unlock achievements or trophies. I do it to finish a story, or have fun blowing stuff up, or for a race, or to escape from reality. My goal is finish the game and I don't need all these microgoals to achieve this. I don't need to run 50,000 kms just to unlock an achievement for that. I don't need to blow up 50 people in a row to unlock that trophy. It makes no sense.
Some people will argue that adds replayability. Does it really though? Think back to older games that you've played a bunch of times. You played them because you had a great experience with them and not because of some unlockables that don't add anything to the game.
But hey, if you get your kicks out of it then more power to you.
