DLC AOK?

Dr Game,
It always seems like downloadable content comes out within a couple of months after the release of a game - why can't developers just put this content into the game rather than us fork out more dollars for it?
- Stu, via email
I see your point Stu, in the beginning it did frustrate me that developers would release a game and then bring out content within a couple of months that would extend a story or improve an experience but only if you could afford it.
However these days, on most occasions, these downloadable content packs are more like expansion packs rather than weapons, skins, clothes or dare I say Horse Armour. Take a look at Fallout 3's Operation Anchorage or Fable II's Knothole Island, these add another 6-10 hours to your experience and if this was 10 years ago before digital download, you would probably have to pay for this type of content in an EB store because that would be the only way to get it. This way you don't have to deal with their snotty attitude.
Developers seemed to have made the transition from DLC items to full-blown campaigns and worthwhile extras. Burnout Paradise offered new motorcycles, day/night cycles and online modes for FREE, GTA IV is getting a new episode with Lost and the Damned which is supposed to be the equivalent of a third of the original game. Today Ubisoft announced Prince of Persia will receive an Epilogue which is exciting to me as I just finished the game and can now continue the story. Even the SmackDown games get DLC with extra wrestlers, which saves you searching message boards for the ingredients on how to build them yourself.
Games are almost like investments now - think about it, would you rather finish the game and let it collect dust or come back to it in a couple of months to continue a story or take on a new mission?
