Dr Game's E3 - Day 1

June 1st 2009 23:14

What a start to E3 – I have to give credit where credit is due, Microsoft were impressive. If you think back to before today there was not a lot to get excited about for Microsoft. Then in one day they announce a new Left 4 Dead, Forza 3, Crackdown 2, Halo game and more. Here are today’s highlights.

Left 4 Dead 2 announced

Scheduled to arrive November 17 – Left 4 Dead will introduce melee combat with baseball bats, frying pans and chainsaws. Valve has also redeveloped the AI Director, which now controls not only the actions of the zombies but also the weather and pathways. It will be set in the Southern states of the US and your stars will be a female news reporter, high school coach, a mechanic and a con man.

Full 360 games to be downloadable
Starting from August you will be able to buy certain Xbox 360 games from the Marketplace at a price equivalent to retail. Some examples they used were Assassin’s Creed, Mass Effect and Civilization Revolution so we’re not sure if it will be restricted to older titles but it’s still an interesting prospect.

Microsoft announces Project Natal motion camera
An interesting peripheral that everyone saw coming – Microsoft showed a demonstration of a user navigating the dashboard, holding a steering wheel on a car and throwing paint on a canvas. Peter Molyneux of Lionhead Studios (Fable) demonstrated a new title of his where he interacted with a young boy through voice and movement. I’m sure it’s only in the early stages but it’s certainly an impressive peripheral even though I wouldn’t call it a “must-buy” item just yet.

Metal Gear Solid Rising coming to 360
I’m not shocked by this but it is good for 360 owners to get their hands on some Metal Gear goodness. It’s not exclusive but Metal Gear Solid Rising – Lightening Bolt Action was announced as in development for the 360. Judging by the title – I’m guessing this will be action based. It’s set to star Raiden from Metal Gear 2 fame.

Forza 3 coming October
Another no-brainer. Forza looks to be another impressive outing boasting a massive 400 manufacturers. Your move Gran Turismo.

Crackdown 2 announced
Fans have been screaming for this to be announced and they’ve got their prayers answered. While the game keeps the attitude it looks like there will be a new realistic art style but the good news it is being developed by Ruffian Entertainment who was founded by some of the guys who made the first one.

Halo: Reach announced
A new Halo game from Bungie for 2010 – I have no idea what it is about but if you pick up ODST you will get a beta for it.

Lego Harry Potter announced
Travellers Tales has announced they are bringing Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 to all consoles and handhelds next year

Guitar Hero Unplugged
Rip off. Excuse me – it just seems like they’ve completely copied Rock Band’s entry on to the PSP but hey, competition is healthy right?

Monkey Island new and old
Great news for Monkey Island fans – the original classic will be getting the Special Edition treatment for Xbox Live and the PC and then LucasArts will be bringing new episodic content to the PC and Wiiware. No word on when this stuff is coming but it can’t come soon enough.

Fight Night 4 in June
Finally Fight Night Round 4 has been announced as arriving on June 25 – that’s right, this month just got more expensive for you.
