Dr Game's Second Opinion - Fallout 3
November 17th 2008 23:03
I know, I know. It's a little late but considering how frigging huge this game is you can understand that I wanted to put the hours in before I recommended it... and yes, I am recommending it.
If you haven't seen the ads or heard anything about this epic title, Fallout 3 is set in Washington DC just after a nuclear bomb has crushed the American capital. You literally start the game coming out of your mother's womb. You're delivered by your father and choose your own name and looks. You then delve into your childhood years and eventually leave the vault searching for the same father who left you behind. However, you'll come across many other characters and they'll all have missions for you to complete so you can choose to complete these or simply find daddy.
What I love about Fallout 3 is how immersive the game is. Like your character, you have no idea what is outside the vault and everything you discover is new to both of you. The game is all about exploration, meeting new people and learning skills to stay alive. You can play the game any way you want and the way you play it will effect your path later down the track. For example if you decide to put a bullet in everyone's head before muttering a word to them then you're going to have a lot of people acting hostile towards you the first time you meet them. On the other hand if you treat people well and offer your services then you'll increase your skills and earn money to buy supplies.
The surroundings are extraordinary. You'll see all the tourist spots like the White House all desecrated. It's a site to see... obviously you don't want to see it in real life but it gives you a real impression of what the effects of nuclear war could be like. Combat can be a little tricky but it's solid but overall the gameplay is satisfying as you earn experience points for every action you take no matter what it is.
DIAGNOSIS
Fallout 3 is a huge game. If you've got time to invest then Fallout 3 will pay dividends. But if you struggle to find time then you might not get what you want out of it. Also beware, time disappears when you throw in this game. I tried building up my lockpicking skills by breaking into places and then went for a wander in the wasteland of DC and ended up playing for 4 hours. It's just that damn good.
