I wouldn't blame you for mistaking the above screenshot for Gears of War 1. The original Gears was gorgeous - probably one of the best looking games on the Xbox 360. It's hard to believe but Gears 2 is actually even better looking. If you watch them side by side you'll notice that there is a lot more detail in Gears 2 and a lot more colourful.
Gears 2 sees the return of the Locusts. It seems like the bomb you detonated did SFA as they're back bigger and better. Now you and your pal Dom must play exterminator again and rid the world of these horrid creatures that look similar to Joan Rivers. Marcus has some new moves including the ability to stab the Lancer into an enemy and use the chainsaw to rip upwards. Nice. You're also not stuck in claustrophobic buildings as much which is a nice change. You can play through the campaign with friends or on your own and while it's a solid campaign it's the multiplayer that will rock your world.
Horde mode is currently using most of Xbox Live's juice. You and five mates team up to take on wave after wave of Locusts. Apparently it can go to Level 50 and to date I don't think anyone has made it that far. It's a lot of fun and very challenging.
If you prefer to fight on your own then there's also the standard deathmatch and capture the flag mode - which has a twist, instead of using a flag you use a downed enemy to drag back to your base.
DIAGNOSIS
If you like Gears 1 then you'll love Gears 2. It's bigger and better with a lot more emphasis on multiplayer. If you didn't like Gears 1 then Gears 2 will not win you over. It's the same core gameplay but prettier with a few new moves.
