Dr Game's Second Opinion - House of the Dead Overkill
March 2nd 2009 22:32
It's not often I review a game for the Wii - purely because there's not a hell of a lot on there that's worth reviewing. But when a game comes along that features gratuitous swearing, Grindhouse-style presentation and more blood splatter then Dexter - you know I got to check it out.
House of the Dead Overkill is a prequel to all the other House of the Dead games. You play as then infamous Agent G and his Samuel L Jackson-like partner Sergeant Washington - and just like the actor he likes to drop the F-Bomb in every sentence.
The gameplay is just like all the other House of the Dead games - it supports the Wii Zapper but all do is simply aim it at the screen and shoot zombies, pick-ups and anything else moving on the screen. The action is superb and the animations fantastic. Every hit shot results in explosion of blood - fitting in with the Grindhouse theme. The only issue is reloading. You have to reload to the right of the screen or keep hitting the trigger until your character reloads. Most of the time it results in damage to yourself because the zombies come at you fast and furious and most of the time you’ll get attacked while you’re trying to reload.
But that's the only complaint I have come across so far - I love the way each chapter begins like a movie trailer complete with voice-over guy and finishing the game unlocks a Director's Cut with new scenes and gameplay. It’s definitely one of the best light-gun games I’ve played in a long time.
