Dr Game's Second Opinion - Killzone 2

March 1st 2009 23:50

So it's finally here - I've been waiting for this game since the infamous trailer in 2005.

And it was worth it.

The single player is a great intense experience where you're dumped straight into the action. You don't get a breath between battles - as you normally don't in a war. The story is simple - you're invading an enemy planet to take out an evil dictator... sound familiar? You're no lone soldier either - you'll always have soldiers around you backing you up when you need it.

While on the surface it looks like Killzone 2 doesn't do anything new - it does feel like a completely new experience in the FPS genre. It slows down the pace in that there is no point going in guns blazing as the Helghast are too smart and will just take you out. Plus you're packing a big load of armour so it can be a ittle tough moving around. That's something most FPS fans will have to get used to. Killzone 2 does feel sluggish and aiming can take a little while to get used to mainly because it's not as fast as Call of Duty or Halo. But it still works and it helps to know that the same applies to your foes so you're not at a disadvantage.

But in the end it is fun and that's what matters most. It's a good story and an intense experience and that's all you want in a FPS single player mode.

Multiplayer is a blast. I haven't played a lot of online gaming on the PS3 but it now has my full attention thanks to Killzone 2. I love the skirmish mode. Basically it's one huge game that has five or six minigames within it. You might start off with a game of territories then move on to a search and destroy mission and finish off with a deathmatch. There's usually about five or six missions within a game. My favourite would have to be Assassin where one player is selected and you've got to hunt them down. I haven't seen anyone win that yet but it's a blast to find the guy and even protect your team mate while an army rushes you. I haven't experienced any lag at all but the server has crashed a couple of times but I think it's so much better than the Call of Duty online servers.

DIAGNOSIS - RECOMMEND
I do recommend this to anyone who enjoys FPS games. Killzone 2 will not win over anyone who's not a fan of the genre. It's a textbook FPS but one that will offer a different kind of experience for anyone looking for an alternative to Call of Duty.
