Dr Game's Second Opinion - Resistance 2

November 30th 2008 23:27

Wow. I wasn't expecting to be sucked in to Resistance 2 but I did.

I'll admit the first one was fairly average, it rode on the coat-tails of being the only decent launch title for the PS3. That's not to say it wasn't a good game it's just that it wasn't a stand out title.

Resistance 2 though is a stand-out title. The minute I stepped outside the American facility and saw the skies of San Francisco littered with Chimera spacecrafts I was amazed. It looked like a scene out of Independence Day but Will Smith wasn't around to rap about it.

Resistance 2's campaign picks up right where the original left off. Nathan Hale has been picked up by the Americans and taken to a facility for observation. It's not long before he's headed for battle once again against the Chimera. You'll travel from coast-to-coast exterminating the Chimera with a bunch of "holy-shit" moments littered throughout. One of my favourites was the Chameleon, which looks similar to a predator. These guys just launch at you and it only takes one swipe of it's massive paw to kill you so you need to be ready with a shotgun blast in order to survive.

Boss battles are epic - on the same scale as God of War. One of the opening battles sees you onboard a helicopter launchpad in the middle of the ocean and a huge Fiend is lurking smacking at platform making you feel like you're on a sail ship in the middle of a storm.

It doesn't end with the campaign. You and seven mates can team to take on the Chimera in a separate co-op campaign sweeping through several levels of chaos. There's no room for a Rambo, you'll need to work together to overcome the obstacles otherwise you'll end up worm food.

Finally there's the online competitive mode which has your standard deathmatch, the massive 60 player skirmish and capture the flag style matches. Online is decent enough but not as deep as say Call of Duty. There are levelling up options and you can select your weapons and a special ability (perk) but when you're playing it you do kind of feel like "why am I not playing Call of Duty?"

DIAGNOSIS
If you're a PS3 owner then buy this game. The campaign is worth the price alone but online and co-op is a bonus. You will have fun with this title no matter what mode you play in even if the online is not as good as some other online titles.
