Finding your way...

Dr Game,
I'm playing through Mario Galaxy at the moment and I'm wondering if I should pick up the Strategy Guide or whether everything in that strategy guide is online. Should I fork out money for the guide or just surf the net?
- Money, via email
Money, if that is your real name, that's kind of like asking should I pay for music or download it through Limewire?
If you look hard enough you'll find everything in that strategy guide on the world wide web. www.gamefaqs.com is a great source for walkthroughs, hints, tips and secrets for all of your favourite games. If for some reason the answer can not be found here then you can always Google your question and you'll find the answer on a games forum or amateur site.
Another alternative is subscribing to IGN or Gamespot's services. These guys offer online game guides to paying members so not only will you get pretty pictures but you'll get everything in the hard copy strategy guides. Of course if you wait a little while they'll eventually be FREE!
For more popular games like Mario Galaxy there are probably 20 or 30 guides online telling you how to get every single star or token so you shouldn't have any problem. It's often the tougher sort of games like Ninja Gaiden Sigma or Devil May Cry 3 where you might need a premium subscription to get a decent strategy for the boss on the toughest difficulty. Of course there's no lack of bad games out there so I would suggest moving on to the next game and coming back to it when a free game guide is online. But hey, that's me.
