Free DLC?

Dr Game,
With announcement that Left 4 Dead's DLC will be free - do you think more companies should consider free DLC?
- Kev, via email
I definitely would love to see more publishers offer free DLC but only in certain circumstances.
I think any map packs, clothing items or objects like cars, people or horse armour etc should be free. By releasing these for free then I think it would mean more people would play these titles resulting in it showing up on Major Nelson's top 10 games on Live. It could also result in more sales of the product as people who don't have the game may want to join in with everyone else.
As for new modes and expansion packs like the new Lost and the Damned GTA pack or Prince of Persia Epilogue - I think these packs should remain as premium content. This type of content changes the game and brings a new experience. PC Gamers have been paying for expansion packs for years and this is simply a downloadable version of that.
Realistically though most publishers will see that anything they release is building upon what you've already purchased but I think there is a big difference between adding something like The Lost and the Damned and a map pack containing three new multiplayer maps. I have to applaud Valve for releasing a new mode for free. They could have easily charged people for this and made a packet. Criterion also must be applauded for supporting a game that's over 12 months old with DLC. They've only begun releasing premium content and for the most part it's looking decent.
Hopefully Valve will lead the way for a change in the way DLC is charged but I wouldn't get your hopes up Kev.
