Give me a challenge!

Dr Game,
I find games too easy these days. Can you give me a list of games that will give me a challenge?
- Michelle, via email
Wow! A girl gamer who finds games too easy. You're one of a kind Michelle.
As for games that will challenge your skills, sadly there's not a lot of them anymore. But if you hunt these titles down you can guarantee at least one of your controllers will get snapped in frustration.
Ninja Gaiden
I am still currently playing Sigma on the PS3 but it is still one of the most difficult games I've ever played. There's no such thing as consistency here. Sometimes you can dominate enemies and other times they will rape you without even letting you get in a slice. However you won't feel as much satisfaction from any other game like you will here.
Devil May Cry 3
This is also insanely difficult... even on the easy mode. Prepare to make your acquaintance with the Game Over screen because you'll probably see this scene more often then the Mission screens. It doesn't matter how many walkthroughs you read or how many forums you visit, if you haven't got the skills then you won't reach the end credits here.
Maximo
Maximo is still one of my favourite games of all times. It is based on the Ghouls & Ghosts series which is no walk in the park either. While a lot of the enemies can be defeated easily, you'll need to constantly upgrade your weapons to be one up on the tougher ones otherwise you'll lose your pants... literally.
Guitar Hero II
If you can conquer Stairway to Heaven on Extreme then you're my new hero because this is the most insanely difficult section in any videogame ever made and if you think I'm overreacting then you haven't played it. Guitar Hero II is tough in itself but Stairway, well there's a reason why they say No Stairway.
