Dr Game,
You've mentioned LittleBigPlanet a few times in your blog, is it really worth getting?
- Jono, via email
You know, before this last weekend I would have said probably not. I would have called it an over-rated platformer. While it's cute, it's nothing special.
But then I checked out some of the user-created content and the only words I can use to describe my experience is Holy Shit.
And I use that in a complimentary way...
The first level I checked out was a tribute to the Silent Hill games, one of my favourite series of all time, and it was brilliant. There was a sign saying "Welcome to Silent Hill", the elementary school, the hospital, the lot. At one point the walls completely disappeared to illustrate the "other world" and the final section had a fight with Pyramid Head. It was just awesome.
Then I checked out another level based on the TV series Twin Peaks. It wasn't as brilliant as Silent Hill, in fact I couldn't finish it because I kept dying, but from what I saw there was the tall trees, the timber mill, the RR restaurant and even the Red Room.
There was another one based on the Ghostbusters movie complete with quotes from the film and a giant marshmallow man at the top of the building. As you climb the stairs the footsteps get louder and louder and then you see it.
There are thousands of levels online, not all based on IPs. Media Molecule even highlight a few levels they find brilliant in their Community News. This is the reason to buy LittleBigPlanet. Search for highly rated levels and jump in. Loading doesn't take long and it's just all so charming. It might even motivate you to try and build your own level.
So I can't recommend it enough, check it out. If you have a question for Dr Game then email paulfrew@hotmail.com
