Should map packs be free?

Dr Game,
Are the new Call of Duty World at War maps worth buying?
- Jake, via email
I started to rant about this last week - I don't think the maps are worth buying if you don't play Call of Duty often. If you've put it aside for a while and haven't come back to it then the three maps and Nazi Zombie addition won't make you rush into getting it back into your disc tray. If however World at War doesn't leave your disc tray then yeah, get the maps.
What Treyarch has done for the new maps is put them in their own playlist. So you play three maps over and over again which is annoying. They will be integrated with the older maps but for now it's not a lot of fun.
What I think Treyarch should have done, and Infinity Ward should follow suit, is make the maps free. The real purpose of map packs is to keep the game fresh and to stop us from playing other multiplayer titles like Gears 2, Killzone 2 or Halo 3. What better way to distract us by offering these maps for free. That way you wouldn't have to have a separate playlist and it would mean players could dust off their copy, put it in and play something a little different from the last time they played it.
I remember playing Modern Warfare 2 and it consistently having over 100,000 players online. Some days I will see World at War with only around 23,000 players which is not great news for Treyarch. Halo 3, a game that is a couple of years old, is consistently up there. Even Modern Warfare is around the top 5 spot on Xbox Live. I would think if Treyarch wants that top spot again then they're going need to offer something more than a Double XP weekend.
