Dr Game,
Have you played Dead Space? What's the verdict?
- Xan, via email
Buy it!
I was very hesitant of Dead Space initially. Firstly because it had an EA logo on it and secondly when I saw gameplay footage of it, the camera always seemed too close. I thought maybe it was deliberate so to seem claustrophobic but it looked like enemies could attack off-screen and that always tends to piss me off.
But I found it for $50 and I thought I would buy it and check it out. All the critics raved on about it so I wanted to see what the fuss was all about.
The game had me in the opening minutes when I encountered my first enemy. I ran inside an elevator as instructed thinking I would be safe, then with Terminator-like claws it opened the closed doors and screeched this high-pitched squeal before the doors gave way and transformed it into a pool of blood.
It's not just encounters like these that make Dead Space a must-play. It has as much atmosphere as games like Bioshock. Lights will flicker, you'll hear the tapping of claws along steel-grate floors and what sounds like blood dripping into pools of well, er, blood.
The game is not incredibly long either which I love because with the amount of high-quality games that came out at the end of 08 and with a more games coming early this year, you should have this finished by the time Killzone 2 comes out or the DLC for Fallout 3.
If you're looking for something to play and need to feel scared once again then you can't go wrong with Dead Space. I didn't do a Second Opinion only because I picked up the game a month after it came out so it would have been dated. But I would have rated it a 9 out of 10.
