Dr Game,
Do you think the nudity in GTA Lost and Damned is going to cause controversy?
- Sam, via email
I think you already know the answer Sam. In a day when politicians and people in power still believe that mature gamers are a minority - anything related to sex or graphic violence is immediately cause outrage.
I don't think it's that big a deal. Access to nude images aren't exactly hard to find. The internet is full of celebrities not wearing undies or sunbathing nude. There are celebrity sex tapes available to stream and you can even find TV shows illustrating sex - just check out Australia’s TV show Underbelly. There are cartoons and anime with sexual images so nothing is sacred. So I don't think it's a big deal...
... as long as you're aware that the product may contain nudity, sexual images or whatever.
I do agree in classification as it does make parents aware of what material is appropriate or not appropriate for their children. Some parents might be fine with letting their kids witness their material and that's totally fine if they believe their kids can handle it. But on the other end there are parents not cool with it and they don't want to subject their kids to this kind of material at that age. And that's cool with me too.
But for anyone campaigning that kids will get access to the material despite their parents or despite classification rules then that's a problem for the parents and not for religious groups or politicians. You can not fix the problem simply by putting a ban on it or censoring it. It's not fair to the mature gamers who are the MAJORITY of gamers these days and it doesn't fix the problem.
Fine retailers for selling to miners, put parental locks on consoles or create stores that only cater to mature gamers. There are other alternatives. With Obama in power in the US maybe modern thinking will trickle around the world.
