The rise and fall of adventure games

October 20th 2008 22:05

Dr Game,

Will point and click games ever be popular again? I was a big fan of Leisure Suit Larry and Space Quest but they don't make these types of games anymore. Do you know if anyone will return to these kinds of games?

- Leo, via email

Well Leo, I'm not sure if you've been looking hard enough. While the old school adventure game is not as huge as it once was, you can still find these types of games around.

Probably the best example is on the DS with Hotel Dusk. While it's largely text based, the characters are so well developed and the story is brilliantly unravelled before your eyes.

The DS also hosts some other adventure style games like Touch Detective and CSI: Dark Motives. If you're into homebrewing then you can even import your classic adventure games like Monkey Island and Police Quest and play them on your DS.

Two icons from the adventure genre has returned recently with episodic content and is making their debut on the Wii very soon. Sam and Max, two hilarious and fantastic characters will bring Season One of their episodic series to the Wii for some point and click gaming. The series has been critically acclaimed and if it continues you might just find other developers looking to create more titles for the genre.

The one I'm most looking forward to Leo is a little gem called Three Cards to Midnight. This comes from the creators one of my favourite series of all time, the Tex Murphy series. Three Cards to Midnight sees a young girl called Jess stuck in a room with a man she's never seen before. She has some kind of amnesia that's blocked out the events of the past days or weeks. The man says he's there to help Jess remember and then begins to lay out Tarot cards, which trigger events that Jess has forgotten. It is going to be amazing. You do not want to miss it.

So Leo, the old school adventure game or point and click genre or whatever you want to call it is alive and well. Even if there are not as many games as we'd like coming out for it, there's still plenty of titles for you to enjoy. But I'm sure no one will give you any grief if you whip out one of Roger Wilco's old adventures.

the great thing about the adventure game genre is that it went underground... you can find loads of freeware adventure games (the Yahtzee games, Dirty Split, Ben There, Dan That), and even old classics for free..
