To street fight or not to street fight?

Dr Game,
I've never played a Street Fighter game before but I've heard good things about Street Fighter IV so I'm wondering should I get it?
- Dave, via email
Well Dave, while I've played Street Fighter before I've never been any good at it. I've not picked up Street Fighter IV for a few reasons.
Before I start I have a ton of respect for Street Fighter and the reasons I give are purely my own personal reasons. It all really boils down to that I'm not any good at Street Fighter.
Street Fighter IV is at its best when you're playing against other people. Unless you've got friends coming around all the time or have lots of friends online playing this game then you're probably not going to the value out of the game. I've heard there are a few connections issues but even when you do find a match - if you haven't had any experience then prepare to be dominated again and again and again. The people you're most likely going to play against have been playing Street Fighter games since day 1.
While Capcom has made every effort to lure newcomers in by making the moves more accessible, it still requires a lot of skill. If you've got the time then you can learn by playing through the single player arcade. But have you got time to do that with games like Resident Evil 5 and Killzone 2 out now? If you do then put in the time to try and compete online but still expect to be dominated - mostly by Ken.
Now I'm not going to be pick it up - like I said before, I've never been any good at Street Fighter. The animation is fantastic, it looks gorgeous and while it's welcoming to newcomers - I just know the second I go online I will be dominated and I will put this on the pile of games I'm not playing... like Soul Calibur IV.
