When demos go bad
February 8th 2009 22:52
Dr Game,
Is it just me or was the demo for Resident Evil really bad? It's made me question whether or not I should pick up the game. Do you think games should even release demos anymore as it might effect sales?

Well, it wasn't so much bad as it was disappointing. I think it's unanimous that everyone hates being glued to the spot when they're trying to kill zombies.
I still think demos should be released - if you're on the fence about a game then I would rather download it for free then spend $100 to find out whether I’ll like it or not. As for Resident Evil 5, I do hate being glued to the spot as well but I think it's just something you have to get used to if you want to enjoy the game. But we all know most gamers aren't patient people - they want satisfaction immediately and if they don't get it then they automatically write it off.
I also think Killzone 2 could come into this discussion - it wasn't exactly the blockbuster I was expecting. Graphically, I think it's amazing. Gameplay wise, well I think it requires some control adjustment and as I mentioned - if there's no satisfaction immediately then well, it's automatically written off. Well not really, I'm still looking forward to it but it just didn't blow me away as much as I'd expected. Will wait and see with the full game.
One demo I did love was the FEAR 2 demo. I remember playing the original FEAR's demo and loving it but this one just topped that. Monolith has really topped themself when it comes to scaring the shit out of you and the gunplay is a lot more solid. I loved using the sniper rifle and I usually hate sniping sections in games. Check it out if you get a chance.
I also downloaded the Halo Wars demo but I'm in no rush to check it out - I'm not a big RTS fan so I'm going in with low expectations. Normally that's when games turn out to better then what they are.
